The goal of this program is to instruct trainees in the following areas: marketing, media, administration, and facilities and event management. Courses will follow a progressive certification format that increases in level, content, and accreditation hours. The lowest certification level is the ‘C’ level license, which presents general information on the aforementioned topics. The ‘B’ level license builds on the general concepts taught in the ‘C’ license and goes into greater depth in terms of theory and application.


The ‘A’ level license will be for experienced trainees, encompassing more abstract concepts than the previous levels. This Football Certification Program offers various levels of certification designed to meet the needs of coaches, coordinators, and administrators.

For 35 years, the Academy has delivered sports certification programs to more than a quarter million people in over 60 countries. Continuing Education offerings include individual courses, a certificate program, and various certification programs.

2.2.1 Certificate Programs

Certificates are designed to meet the needs of coaches, trainers, fitness leaders, and managers seeking specialization in specific areas. Trainees who successfully complete one of the following courses will be able to print a course completion certificate from within the course shell. A certificate for the specific certificate area may be requested by contacting the Department of Continuing Education. Each course is worth 4 CEUs. Certificate courses are available in the following areas: sports management, sports coaching, human performance and sports security management.

Sports Management

Sports Management Certificate courses are designed to help trainees become specialists in the various areas of sports management. The following Sports Management Certificates, along with the required course for each certificate area, are available:

     - CEM 551 Sports Public Relations

A study of the nature, content and application of public relations in sport programs as related to educational institutions, organizations and associations.

     - CEM 586 Sports Law and Risk Management

Introduces trainees to the fundamental tenets of the law and familiarizes them with the legal structure and accompanying terminology.

     - CEM 544 Sports Marketing

        A study of sport marketing principles and the elements of the marketing mix. Selected topics include advertising, promotions, pricing, sponsorships, licensing, and market segmentation.

Sports Coaching

Sports Coaching Certificate courses will help trainees expand their specializations in sports coaching. The following Sports Coaching Certificates, along with the required courses, are available:

     - CEB 373 Scientific Principles of Coaching

Designed to teach coaches how to apply scientific principles to sports coaching.

     - CEB 568 Sports Psychology

The study of human behavior in sport and exercise settings. Designed to provide trainees with the latest research on the theories of individual personality and motivational behaviors in sports participation.

     - CEB 571 Sports Coaching Methodology

Designed to provide trainees with a theoretical base for teaching sport and sport skills with practical application. Includes the development of a coaching philosophy with an emphasis upon ethics in coaching. Also, a review of the impact of contemporary trends and issues on coaching is presented.

Human Performance

Human Performance Certificate courses are designed for trainees interested in specialized work in the area of human performance. The following Human Performance Certificates, along with the required course for each certificate area, are available:

     - CEB 368 Sports Psychology

A focus on the study of motivational phenomena that affect individual athlete and team performances.

Designed to cover the complete spectrum of training intensity.

Sports Security Management

Sports Security Management courses are designed for trainees interested in specialized work in the area of sports security management. The following Sports Security Management Certificates, along with the required course for each certificate area, are available:

     - CEM 487 Introduction to Sports Security Management

    This course examines the concepts, principles and methods of organizing and administering security management and loss-prevention activities in industry, business, government and sport venues. Emphasis is on protection of assets, personnel and facilities.

     - CEM 488 Contemporary Sports Security Management

In this course trainees examine principles and issues in security management as well as the challenges, concepts, strategies and skills needed to manage security-related operations and activities. Focus is on leadership in management, personnel management, security planning and evaluation, communication and best practices.

     - CEM 489 Introduction to Emergency Management for Sport Settings

This course examines theories, components, systems, and strategies in contemporary disaster and emergency management. Trainees examine: 1) The historical, administrative, institutional, and organizational framework of disaster and emergency management in the United States; 2) The role of the federal, state, and local governments in disasters; 3) The role of nongovernmental organizations in emergency management; 4) The role of land use regulation, the media, crisis communication, insurance, and citizen participation; 5) The social and economic costs of disasters; and 6) The management of natural and man-made disasters.

Recreation Management:

Recreation Management Certificate courses will provide trainees with information about the history and concepts surrounding recreation and leisure, and equip them to administer effective and popular recreation programs in a variety of settings. The following Recreation Management Certificates, along with the required course for each certificate area, are available:

     - CEM 535 Introduction to Parks, Recreation and Tourism

A survey of the concepts and issues related to leisure, parks, recreation, and tourism in American society. Also, the effects of recreation and leisure on social, individual, and environmental aspects of our society will be examined.

     - CEM 536 Philosophy and History of Recreation and Leisure

This course is designed to discuss philosophies and contemporary social issues concerning recreation and leisure. Also, the history of recreation and leisure will be discussed.

     - CEM 537 Introduction to Recreational Sport Management

Explores concepts and applications of effective recreational sport programming and administration. Information concerning careers in recreational sport management will be presented.

2.2.2 Certification Programs

Certification Programs are designed to meet the needs of coaches, fitness leaders, administrators and managers in achieving their desired career goals. The Academy’s Certification programs provide students with a strong foundation of skills and knowledge required for succeeding in the respective disciplines. The Academy has developed sport-specific certification programs for online and onsite delivery. Each certification program consists of six courses worth 4 CEUs per course. All courses are online.

Certification in Sports Security Management

Certification in Sports Security Management examines sports security specifically as well as other general areas within the scope of security operations; namely, sports administration, facility management, and public relations. The popularity and visibility of sport contests makes them attractive targets for all kinds of disruptive activities from guerilla marketing to terrorist attacks. The attack on athletes during the 1972 Olympic Games highlighted the need for increased security measures surrounding sports events and the importance of comprehensive planning and follow-through by security services. Governing bodies and event hosts are no longer simply responsible for staging the event itself but rather for insuring the safety of athletes and spectators, care of the venues, and insuring the financial integrity of the event.

2.3 Sport Diploma Programs

The Sports Diploma Program is a unique program of advanced study designed for sport professionals and practitioners who have had extensive experience in sport. Trainees may pursue a Sports Diploma in Sports Management or Sports Coaching. The Sports Diploma Program uses an applied approach that includes 2 courses (in addition to the 6 courses in the certification programs), a mentorship (200 contact-hours), and a project paper detailing the mentorship experience. This program is ideal for those who desire a more in-depth perspective into a particular area of sport.

To be eligible for the Sports Diploma Program, trainees must first complete one of the following certification programs:

     - Certification in Sports Management

Certification in Sports Management provides trainees opportunities to further their knowledge base in the sport-related areas of business, administration, personnel management, marketing, public relations and facility management/program development.

     - Sports Coaching

       Certification in Sports Coaching provides trainees with the knowledge and skills to help them succeed in coaching at all levels of sport.

Program Specifics

Each certification program consists of 6 courses; trainees must complete at least 4 courses of a certification program prior to starting the Sports Diploma Program. (Please note that all 6 courses must be completed before trainees begin their mentorship). Trainees must also declare their intention of participating in the Sports Diploma Program upon registering for a certification Program.

Mentorship Program

The Mentorship program included in the Sports Diploma program is a professional field-experience under the guidance of an approved mentor. The program is designed to meet the specific needs and interests of trainees with regards to certain learning objectives. During the required 200 hours of activity, trainees are involved in developing programs, planning strategies and organizing tactics to meet objectives in chosen sport-related professions. When trainees are ready to begin their mentorship, they will receive a copy of the Academy Sports Diploma Mentorship Handbook.
